Things To Consider for a Teenage Boy (from Stacey)

Clothing:
**Prefer to keep the tags on the clothing for the kids to see that the clothes are new. For almost all of these kids have never owned a piece of new clothing before, only used clothing. It is very exciting for them to get new clothing.

  • Underwear:  Boxer briefs
  • T-shirts: Solid dark colored t-shirts - black, blue, gray. Maybe something with the 'Nike' symbol or the word 'Nike' written on it - very special to have 'Nike' on t-shirt or symbol on t-shirt. Prefer to not have any other writing on the shirt like 'USA'. Soccer t-shirt with Umbro or Adidas written on it is nice.
  • Polo shirts: Dark colors, limited prints or stripes (check out Ross or TJ Maxx for a name brand like Tommy Hilfiger if want to add something something special to the clothing selection. Also check Salvation Army or Goodwill for brands like Ralph Lauren Polo or Tommy Hilfiger)
  • Shorts: Long cargo style shorts in jean or khaki; also soccer shorts
  • Sweatsuit: Nice selection at Wal-Mart - dark colors - has the liner (not mesh liner) in the pants and jacket. Also a nice selection at Ross or TJ Maxx.
  • Sweatshirts: Hooded sweatshirts are nice, maybe a gray or black color. Check Kohl's when they have good sales or Wal-Mart has a nice selection too. The Russell brand is nice.
  • Sweaters: Simple sweaters that are solid dark colors with few strips and no prints - very simple.
  • Jeans/pants - Cargo styles are popular. Maybe the Levi's brand is nice if you want to send something extra special, but name brand shouldn't matter, only the style. Great deals at Old Navy store.
  • Socks: Send dark socks and white crew
  • Jacket: Pullover nylon jacket with hood
  • Pajamas: Sweats make good pajamas.

Great stores for clothes shopping:
  • Old Navy - great selection of clothing for teens, can't go wrong shopping there
  • Wal-Mart
  • Kohl's - when you can get a great sale
  • Goodwill - great for finding name brand designer clothing that looks brand new - no tag doesn't matter when it is designer brand
  • TJ Maxx
  • Ross

Shoes:
** Color of the shoes should be black if possible
  • Athletic shoes - avoid white tennis shoes. Dark gray/black - New Balance on sale
    * Other shoes - the "in style" are also those shoes that look like bowling shoes - in for Europe
  • Boots/dress shoes - black and the Sketchers brand are popular - can buy a cheaper brand like GBX at Kohl's. Great deal if bought on sale at Kohl's.
  • Slippers - the kind that are you wear socks with - with a single Velcro connection on the shoe - Wal-Mart for $7 or so

Hygiene Items:
** Send enough to last 6 months if you can
  • Wal-Mart brand "Equate" is cheap and great quality
  • Deodorant: Send at least 4 sticks of deodorant (Mennen Speed Stick is the cheapest I could find and bought it at Wal-Mart) - buy enough to last at least 6 months
  • Toothpaste: 3 tubes of toothpaste - 83 cents a tube at Wal-Mart - Equate brand
  • Shampoo: Suave Apple scent at Wal-Mart is the cheapest. Buy some cheap Wal-Mart gallon size ziplock bags to bag and seal the shampoo in case it leaks. (3 bottles)
  • Acne cleaner- your teen may have an acne problem, consider sending Oxy-10 pads that come in a container with 90 pads. This is a great product for helping with acne and can help improve self esteem if acne is cleared up. (2 containers)
  • Soap and soap container (4 to 6 bars)
  • Toothbrush container
  • Shaving cream (3 cans)
  • Razors
  • Dental floss

Other Items:
  • Very durable back pack
  • Umbrella
  • Cards
  • Checkers
  • UNO
  • CD headset with lots of batteries - music selections can be suggested if asked
  • Chips or cheese ball snacks that come in the solid plastic container ($1 each at Wal-Mart)
  • Soccer ball (deflated) with pump

* This is not a complete listing of items the children could need, but are some examples.   You are not required to send all of the above items on this list, just pick a few you think your child would like and are personal from you.
